We all know how criticism is very important to improve our skills or more, but sometimes it get very hurtful especially if we worked really hard on that thing, so if we get hurt buy it so does other people, that's why we need to learn how to criticize in a smart, loving way cause you don't want to be the reason of killing that ray of creativity in people do you?
*Be honest but....: First try to understand the whole thing then look for anything good about it like colors, effect..etc then say that you liked these specific thing then use the "BUT" word.... now you could say what's wrong with their work without using harsh words like awful, scary ,dump! But you could use weird, unsuitable, doesn't fit ...etc
And always watch your physical and facial reaction to make it look serious and objective.
*make it clearer:
Maybe they just missing one clue or they didn't know what you want exactly or what the people want or the style... etc, always make sure to clear that to them.*Offer something else:
At the end you could always give them advice or a clue about how to make it look better and you could offer your help or somebody else's or give them bunch of books, websites names who could help them more.
